About

Born and raised in New York City, Alexandra Rowley is an award-winning visual artist and published poet whose work has been exhibited internationally in solo and group exhibitions at galleries and art foundations. She has been awarded residencies at the UCross Foundation and the Atlantic Center for the Arts.

With decades of engagement across photo-based media, Rowley brings deep technical fluency to her practice, working rigorously across analog and digital forms, including photograms, large-format photography, darkroom-based processes, and advanced digital techniques.

Rowley’s practice centers on how social and cultural systems shape intimacy, (be)longing, memory, and identity. Working primarily in photography and installation, she employs a spare, minimalist visual language to examine structures such as family, home, financial and cultural systems. Her projects often unfold over extended periods as interconnected series, guided by an almost forensic archival sensibility. Through repetition and variation, her work accumulates meaning while foregrounding process, interdependence, and lived experience.

Alongside her studio practice, Rowley has long committed her creative labor to community engagement. She has photographed pro bono for Everytown for Gun Safety and Indego Africa; served on the board of the Humane Society of NY; volunteered with the CCHP/Early Childhood Development Center at NYC’s Metropolitan Hospital; and is a longtime member of the Female Design Council and photo collective, The Luupe and has donated work to auctions that benefit organizations she aligns with including ACRIA, BOMB magazine, Friends Without A Border among others.

Alexandra lives with her husband, writer and editor Stephen Wallis, and their son in New York City.
