About
Born and raised in New York City, Alexandra Rowley is an award-winning visual artist whose work has been exhibited internationally in solo and group shows at galleries as well as art foundations.
Alexandra brings a powerful, sophisticated sense of humanity to her work. Her photographs and installations employ minimalist language to explore various social and cultural institutions—family, home, legacy, financial and cultural structures, traditional masculinity —with nuance and lyricism. She often explores her subjects in series, delving into an almost forensic archival practice that results in multiple typologies while also focusing on creative process and connection.
Deeply knowledgeable about both the history and technical aspects of art and photography, she is on the faculty at the International School of Photography. Alexandra is a member of the Female Design Council, she served on the board of the Humane Society of New York from 2004-2022, and she joined the NY Advisory Council of the National Democratic Institute from 2017-2019. Alexandra lives with her husband, writer and editor Stephen Wallis, and their son in New York City.
